Software Protection Service Turn Off
The Windows File Protection feature in Microsoft Windows prevents programs from replacing critical Windows system files. You may have to turn the feature on or off in certain configurations. You can enable or disable Windows File Protection in Microsoft Windows with a registry edit. Just use these steps.
Note: Windows File Protection is enabled by default in all versions of Microsoft Windows.
This post applies to Windows 10, 8, 7, and Vista.
- Hold the Windows Key and press “R” to bring up the Run dialog box.
- Type “regedit“, then select “OK“.
- The Registry Editor opens. Navigate to the following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- SOFTWARE
- Microsoft
- Windows NT
- CurrentVersion
- Winlogon
- Look for the key “SFCDisable“and double click on it. If it doesn’t exist, create it by right-clicking the “Winlogon” folder and choose “New” > “DWORD (32-bit value)“
- Set the value to one of the following:
- 1 – disabled, prompt at boot to re-enable
- 2 – disabled at next boot only, no prompt to re-enable
- 4 – enabled, with popups disabled
- ffffff9d – for completely disabled
- 0 – Enabled
- Restart Windows. You may receive a message at startup that says “Windows File Protection is not active on this system. Would you like to enable Windows File Protection now? This will enable Windows File Protection until the next system restart.” Choosing “Yes” will reactivate Windows File Protection and the message will appear at every login until “SFCDisable” is set to “0” again.

Hi Guru,
Thank you for your response.
Unfortunately activating isn't the issue, it is the software protection service. The service keeps stopping and then asking me to activate, which I can't because the SP service has stopped and when I try to run it I get Access Denied Error 5.
However, when the service is running and I check activation it tells me I have an activated copy of Windows 10 Pro. Then it stops and asks me to activate. So my licence is activated and genuine but the issue is with the software protection service.
I notice that if I go to the System32 folder and change the properties by unchecking the 'Read only' attribute and then rebooting that the service runs fine. After a few hours though suddenly I get the activation message.
I have taken a number of recommended steps, as detailed in my initial post. I have also installed the SR1 update.
It's really quite bizzare and any further help would be most welcome.

I also have this issue and have not resolved it yet. Extremely frustrating. I purchased Office 365 for Windows 10 on Office.com so I don't have a product key. What do I do in this case?
Thanks!

This seems to be 'passing the buck' - We have a user with the same problem. Office365 may be the software checking it's license details, but it's the Windows 10 Software Protection Service that is not functioning.
The response is being reported as 'untimely' and frequently the application is erroring that it needs a repair - when it is correct but Windows services is seemingly not

MS for intentionally crippling software for not good reason. They know damn well that the OS will become unusable if the service fails. Intentionally causing distress to consumers/owners.
Install Linux.
