I used to use PDF reader with IO streams, but this no longer works:

We recommended that you have Service Pack 2 installed before installing SP3. In addition, your computer must at least be running Windows XP with Service Pack 1 installed. Windows xp sp3 ghost with all drivers.

This happens on any PDF file. 'b.pdf' is a simple 'hello world' PDF that I generated with LibreOffice. I can view it perfectly fine, pdftotext works as expected, and the tail looks like this:

Oddly, PDF reader can handle the file perfectly well if I do not use an IO stream:

What's going on?
